Inverted flight was hands off plus a slight amount of down elevator, upright flight was hands off. Not a spot of trim was needed, as I used a ruler to trim every surface neutral for flight..

Snap rolls were very nice, and inverted flat spin was really nice and floaty. I can see what some people were saying about the spin rate being a little slow, but it's just right for me. 

I did throttle off landings from ~50 feet without any problem.. just pointing it down and then flaring up at the last minute.. floated her down right at my feet both times.. I also tried taxing around the grass a bit - good authority there.

Bar none, this is the best plane that I've ever flown in my life.. she has a lot of stable tracking in the wind - it was KIND of gusty out there, and I did notice some wing lifting, but it was completely manageable.. My 38" wingspan Fokker D.VII gets tossed around in the wind like a square of toilet paper, so this is a nice plane to fly around on windy days.

Well, two thumbs up for this fine bird - and two thumbs up for PA!

Let me just say wow! I am impressed with everything about this plane. It hovers better than any plane I own, that is for sure. With the incredibly light wing loading, it floats better than any of the fleet as well. Those winglets also make it knife edge like a dream.

Well after seeing the plane fly,reading everything here on the Rcgroups thread and wanting a plane this size,i got one today.Met Cliff from Atlanta Hobby and took one home from the Toledo show.This plane is everything i thought it would be(I have an Electric Shock already)after looking at all the other planes i was interested in, it was hands down getting the Katana MD.

This plane is SOOOO easy to land it's insane! Just cut the power and it'll glide right down. Then give small blips of power to arrest the descent rate and it'll do a perfect 3 point landing looking like a 40% plane. Guaranteed to put a smile on your dial!  Also with the extremely light weight and super strong landing gear.

I think every single person at the club commented on the KMD.... all amazed at how it flies! 
I'm getting better at the hovering, it is SO easy in the KMD (as compared to the Kmini and my Fliton Extra330 60"), I would say just as easy as the Electric Shock, although I do still do it at tree top height in the KMD (not game enough for tail touches yet hehe).
Just as I was sick of all the attention on the KMD at the club someone else turned up with one!! Had a good chat to him, and he was also very happy with it (and this guy has LOTS of electric planes). He gave it a 9.5/10 and said it was the best ARF you can buy.
Well I always find it hard to put into words how a plane flies.... but the KMD really is amazing!

I was among the first to get the Katana MD. It is gorgeous... I can't say enough about it's good qualities. Definitely my favourite plane so far.

Prop hanging and torque rolling this thing is as easy as an indoor foamie. The vertical cg, thrust line and stabs are perfectly lined up by design so it basically harrier rolls axially with very little skill/input required. It will knife edge with only rudder input and zero coupling when you got the cg right on the sweet spot. And wait till you see the elevators and harriers!

I can’t help but repeating what has been said here many times before. What a beauty and what an outstanding technical achievement. The design may be already superhuman; the fabrication is almost non human, like from a different planet. Simply a miracle how al these intricate pieces have been put together. PA must be in big trouble now. How can they ever top this one?

Well, i'm back from my maiden flight, and what can i say...

I flew four packs, and did about ten landings... it was just awesome. That plane is so gentle when set up properly, and touches down like a feather!

You can say all you want, this thing behaves like a trainer! Even better then one. When i almost botched a landing attempt by getting too close to the side of the runway, full throttle and it was free and back in the air! You don't have that kind of power in a trainer, it would have hit the wheat field next to the strip.

I even tried some aerobatics. Just some rolls, loopings and blenders. But it was Awesome with a capital A. Soo much fun!

I'm glad i bought the KMD.

I know I guess I should have gone by the book and did all the trainer stuff but I know how I am and I pick up on stuff too quickly and would have easily have gotten bored. It is amazing how the KMD is my first plane and it is the easiest for me to fly and PA does definitely make a great product.

I finally got to maiden my KMD today. Kind of a record for me. Pulled it out of the box last Sunday and it was ready to fly last night. That says something about the quality of the KMD. It usually takes me a month to assemble an ARF many would build in a weekend.

And, I learned something today.

I CAN fly an airplane with the ailerons REVERSED!!!

I realised it as soon as it left the ground and managed to make one curcuit and then messed up about a foot off the ground. It hit wingtip first and almost cartwheeled. Sent the hatch flying about 10 feet. The KMD survived apparently unscathed. Same landing (if you could call it that  ) would have trashed my Jumping Jack.

Completely not like me! Even planes I've been flying for years I do a control check before every flight. I was so excited to fly it after reading about it for so long, I just plugged it in and off I went.

Anyway, after changing my underwear and doing a little re-programming the 2nd flight was sweet.

I just bought your Katana MD today, and upon opening it and inspecting the details I would just like to compliment you on a job amazingly well done! You have raised the bar for ARF's and ushered in a new era of airplane design. The industry desperately needed a fresh design such as the Katana. 

I got to go to the airfield today to watch another pilot fly his Katana. He couldn't stop talking about how it made him feel like a better pilot ( and only after the first day of flying it) because of how easy it made 3D maneuvers. All the pilots stopped to watch when he was flying. It was truly a sight to behold. I got to fly mine later today and it was the best experience in the past 3 years that I have had flying an RC airplane. The effortless harriers, knife edges,water falls and the list goes on and on.  Just wanted to thank you guys and let you know how your innovations are rocking the rc world. Thanks- Sam M.

Hi guys...

I purchased the KMD last September after watching RadioRookie fly it. However it sat in the box until abt 1.5 months ago when I built and starting flying it.

My basic skills are flying straight, stall turns, rolls, loops, hovers, torque rolls, rolling circles, inverted fig 8s, immelmans, etc...all done as close as possible with good safety margin to spectators, but low to the ground...I enjoy flying low!

First impression flying the KMD for the 1st time with the recommended low rates / expo was overall an OK......for my taste, the aileron response was SPOT on, with the elevator being VERY sensitive to input and the rudder a bit on the slower side.

Since then, I have had abt 200 flights (last week alone was abt 100 - took annual leave just to tame this monster!)...my skills grew exponentially to being able to do inverted harriers fig 8s, harrier rolling circles and latest is strainght line rolling harriers (still learning to do this better)....had a couple of hard landings recovernig too low, enuff to break the landing gear but the nothing else broke! Still have a lot more to learn...... with the KMD.

Im now flying full rates with ever decreasing expo to get the response faster...started out with 100% expo on the elevators, down to 55% now. With constant tweaking of the setup, the KMD feels so much better in all of it axis now.

I have to say from the bottom of my heart that I have not had such an awakening! My zest to fly is at an all time high, more so because I can get my flying skills improving week after week! I have to say that this plane's capability, robustness and everything else has enabled me to rekindled my love to fly! I have slowed down for the last 2 years mainly becos I could not find something suitable to 'fit' my needs, Im a low weight freak (scratch build a 64" funfly with a wingloading of 8 oz per sq ft !!)..the KMD with its low wing loading really fits my requirement!

I hope to have more great adventures with the KMD and kudos to PA for putting this awesome piece of engineering togather!

On the same note, the build of this plane is out of the world, breezed thru the assembly portion.

PA, u have my support.

PS: RR, thanks for pestering me to fly the KMD and for helping me fix my Addiction and for all the help / tips! If it was not for you, I might not have come back to fly with so much 'drive'! Thanks buddy!

PPS: PA, if u are reading this....RR has done so much to support the local pilots who fly PA planes, he doesnt even charge for the repairs and assembly that he does, late night support calls, spare parts support, etc.

We have some guys at our local flying site who upgraded from something like the Multiplex Easystar to the Katana MD. It can be done. The KMD is one of the most gentle and best flying planes out there. Wing loading is extremely low. On low rates and a few warm up sessions on the simulator you could hack it. We also had a 2 beginners training on the Addiction on low rates. Believe it or not.... Low wingloading is the key. And here the KMD and PA in general excels.

The Katana was a revelation to me- handles sweet enough for anybody coming off a trainer, tracks beautifully, does absolutely anything you tell it to do and has the power to get you out of any trouble you might get into- provided you still know which way is up.

This is a plane which will give you plenty of things to learn and do.... and develop your skills as an r/c flyer. With my own Kat I feel for the first time that the premium is all on me- there are NO hardware issues and it's all about developing the software now. In the past I've had planes the couldn't roll (Easystar), couldn't fly inverted or knife-edge (Nemo), or in fact couldn't do anything much (World Models Katana) and unlike sailing, flying is inherently boring if all you can do is fly circuits. Here is something that'll let you explore stuff you'd never dream of doing in a 777 (or indeed anything if you happen to sit in it) and occupy yourself over the next couple years, developing and getting better and better at r/c flying..... oh.. and it probably has the durability to stay with you as you g up the learning curve too.

So here's looking forward to the maiden flight...... I'm sure it'll be as pleasant a surprise for you as it was for me!

I started the weekend with 94 flights on the Katana, added 8 more yesterday morning bringing it up to 102.

So another 11 flights were added in the evening and another 11 this morning and so the Kat stands at 124 flights old. These latest 30 flights were longer too since I was flying a less demanding flight profile of climbout-harrier-climbout-harrier than the previous high-speed wingborne stuff AND I'm flying with the CG a lot further back than before meaning I can fly slower and with less throttle so I've only started thinking of landing after 10 minutes of flying instead of my usual 5 to 7. So those last 30 flights were 300 minutes or 5 hours worth of flying meaning the plane has now spent at least 14 hours airborne. More actually since the 5-7 and 10 minutes don't include the landing approaches (and aborted landings with resultant flyaround too).

The thing is... the plane flies just as well as it did on her maiden flight and she's still looking pretty spick and span. Amazing..... chuckability, performance and durability all in one..... and no vices to work around while flying either!

WHAT a plane!! I LOVE IT!!!!

Man the thing rips up the sky. I was zooming around looping, rolling snapping and stuff amazed at how tight and quick all of the maneuvres were for such a big plane. Then I realised I was on low rates. HOLY CRAP it's mad on high rates. Snap rolls are absolutely blinding and it loops and just about catches its own tail. Maddddd. My favourite thing this arvo was going vertical non stop and rolling all the way up as far as I dared. Talk about unlimited vertical.
Flying like this the KMD absolutely rips holes in the sky. It's fast and agile. Unlimited rolling climbs, flat spins, knife edge spins, blenders, snap rolls, inverted passes all done with ease

my katana md flies light on the wings yet the airframe is robust enough to handle high stress manoeuvres. the ipa combo complements the kit very well. the thrust motors .pdf files are extremely helpful b/c they contain info about which propeller is recommended but also which is best for "thrust freaks". thrust motors are super quiet and the vox props are a great choice for the modeller. no more apc for me.

the planes are appealing to the eye and the idea of multiple colour choices is very important as well.

working on the addiction for close in flying. keep up the great work PA

Ive had My katana md for about 3yrs now, with the thrust 30 motor and I can say my plane's been through alot. No major crashes, just some dumb thumbs, but still after all this it still flys straight as an arrow, most likely due to the carbon/balsa infusion. The motor is also perfect, never overheats and has worked flawless.

I owned a Katana MD and enjoyed assembling and flying it. One of the neatest features was the included throw gauge! It made setting up the max deflection for the control surfaces a SNAP!

I like how my PA Katana MD floats like a foamie. It's a fun park plane to fly in close and practice my hovering. I recently flew it in to close...to close to the ground that is. I bent the motor shaft and a few cracks in the cowl, but the plane is fine and will be back flying again as soon as my new shaft gets here.

My Katana MD is just awesome. I love to shock people with how light it is. I hand them the plane, and then they go "wow, that's light". And then I point out that the battery is strapped on the tray. They always assume I handed it to them without the battery. 

Of course it flies great and there is not a possible thing to complain about in that department. The build was very easy too.

My first experience with Precision Aerobatics was seeing their 50cc Edge 540T at our flying field. Of all the planes on the field that day (and since), that one plane always stands out above the rest. It's clean lines, the color scheme, the obvious overall quality, the precision of each component fitting together like a fine-tuned Farrari, not to mention it flies extremely well. I came home from the field that day, determined to find out more about the Precision Aerobatics company.

A few weeks later I purchased a red Kantana MD. As I removed the model from the box it was easy to see the extra care that was taken, even to the packaging of each component of the model. Upon closer examination it was obvious that extreme effort had went into this aircraft; the quality was clearly evident. Just like their Edge 540T, the Kantana MD had the same fantastic quality, just in a smaller, electric, package.

What immediately stuck out was the extra effort that went into the fiberfusion carbon fiberglass bonding, how incredibility light the plane was, and the amazing way PA closely fit the circular fitting aileron-to-wing hinging. It was obvious from the moment I took the plane out of the box that it was going to be a great 3D performer, and it did not disappoint! The Kantana flew responded so quickly and precisely, it made me look like a much better pilot than I am. 

Being the first Precision Aerobatic electric on our field an audience gathered to watch its maiden flight. They were wow'ed by my flying ability. Truth is, I'm only a mediocre R/C (at best).... quietly, I was wow'ed by how well the Kantana help me fly! The funny part was, I was just getting back into the hobby and I hadn't flown an R/C plane in almost 8 years, but I immediately felt comfortable flying with this plane. 

Perhaps the reason I most like Precision Aerobatics aircraft is they stand behind what they sell. As with any electronic component, from any manufacturer, an occasional failure can happen. As it turned out the ESC in my Kantana failed after a couple of flights. I contacted Precision Aerobatics about the problem and they took immediate action to resolve the issue. In short order they had diagnosed the problem and sent me a new replacement component, without charge. 

It would tough to find any company that builds more precise, fantastic flying, great looking R/C aircraft, and stands behind their product like Precision Aerobatics does. 

Next in my hangar? The Precision Aerobatics Edge 540T, of course! :^))

I've got the Katana Mini and The Katana MD. I mostly fly the MD, but have put floats on my Mini and fly it off the snow in the winter. I love The size and performance of the MD. It's amazing how rugged it is in spite of being so light. It's a great flyer, though I don't take advantage of all of its 3D abilities.

I bought my Katana MD for a number of reasons, so it's hard to say what I like "best":
- Light weight and "floaty" yet robust
- Completeness of ARF and ability to buy the complete iPA for a discount AND get everything you need
- Beautiful color schemes
- Flies very smooth and precise

PA...I love your dedication to perfection. You show me that you have an absolute passion for this hobby that exceeds that of any other manufacturer. To have taken the design and engineering of your models to such a high level, namely "CARBON FIBER FUSION" blows my mind!! The longest living and hands down best performing airplane in my arsenal, is my red Katana MD. I’ve even crashed it several times by doing 3D aerobatics 10 to 20 feet up, and when lesser planes would crumple, the Katana just bounces off unscathed. I feel so empowered by an airplane that can take what I dish out! Thanks for building the best and most advanced airplanes in the world. You ROCK!

I won the first one (Katana MD) at a local electric fun fly several years back. Since then I have been hooked on the Katana MD and now have 4 ready to fly, all but one is purple/white. Well, living here in Tennessee you got to have at least one orange/white, go VOLs. Have managed the burry 2 so far, but thats the price you pay when you ar having so much fun. All in all I have had 6 Katana MD and will keep flying them until PA quits making them. Fun plane and strong. Kind of like the old Timex commercial, Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking.

At first I was drawn to the Katana Mini's looks. So I bought one. After building and flying it to destruction I bought 3 more (one of each color). I thought I liked the Katana Mini, but then I tried the Katana MD and became a super PA Katana fan! I have just retired my original KMD with 495 flights on it. On my second flight with it I was flying better than I had ever flown any other plane before. One time one of the old pros at the club saw me flying it and said that I was getting good. I told him that this plane flys itself. The next thing I knew I had won rookie of the year at my club. After a few hundred flights and minor crashes and repairs my original KMD hardly had a single stick on it that had never been broken and repaired. It was like Evel Kinevel. But it still flew like a dream.

I bought a green and white Katana MD this summer. On the PA website the green color scheme was not shown or mentioned. Based on what was listed I decided on a red one. At a local hobby shop there were two left on the shelf but one of them sold while I was thinking it over. Finally I decided to grab one. We opened it up when checking out and WHAT A SURPRISE!

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL BRIGHT GREEN AND WHITE COLOR SCHEME!!! WHAT A FIND!!! 
I am curious as to why this color scheme was not advertised. Surely more people would want it if they knew it existed. I HOPE THERE ARE PLANS TO PRODUCE MORE IN THE GREEN COLOR SCHEME (should mine ever experience a sudden change in velocity I will want another just like it).

On another note, I compared its construction to other models (even more expensive ones) and no other came close to the quality in the kit I bought. Though the price was just slightly above other brands in the same class, my Katana MD came with Carbon Fiber landing gear and a few other items that are considered upgrades on other brands (not to mention that nearly the entire structure of this plane has some amount of carbon fiber in it). I might add that these are useful "upgrades" rather than flashy bells and whistles. In other words, these plentiful kevlar and carbon fiber parts included in the kit are parts that I would likely buy as upgrades had I bought a similar plane from another manufacturer. 

Since I will not need to upgrade the landing gear and other key features, I am actually spending less on my PA Katana MD than I would have for any other comparable model and the additional upgrades.

My PA katana MD actually ended up being the best way to go even in the short run.

I spent four packs in the KMD today. I tried a few new things. First, an inverted elevator... slowly powered up into an inverted harrier... then power up to bring me back to upright flight. That was fun!

I also worked on rolling harriers. HAH!!!! Well, I managed to get in about 5 or 6 rolls at best.... and then was in the totally wrong attitude. I'll keep working on it. Maybe one day the thumb co-ordination will kick in.

I also did some waterfalls, a bit of hovering, regular harriers, inverted flight, lots of loops, upright and inverted... lots of rolls and some really tight wild stuff which if it is named, I don't know what it is.

So, this plane and I are getting along just fine. It's becoming a real joy to fly and is rapidly helping me accomplish more maneuvers. I don't think I'm doing too bad for only 4 months in this hobby! The Katana of course is the big star... doing what it is supposed to do without any nasty habits.

My MD has been through so much and as some know it is my first plane. This thing has been through about 5 serious crashes and about 10 oops on landings. One of the times I wrecked was into the tree line behind my house, I lost sight of it and could only try to get it to where I could see it and then all you heard was the prop trimming leaves and the sound of balsa crushing. It ended up resting in a tree about 50' up. I managed to get it down and the only thing it needed was a new left wing and a couple of small covering patches.

I did my first harrier landing today on my first flight of the day. Decided to go out and do my 3rd and 4th flights and on my 3rd I was practicing my harriers, mainly upright and I have been bringing them down just above the deck and it dropped on me. The landing gear have finally given up after many epoxy overs and I finally broke the original APC e prop. I will have to get new LG but she will be good to go again. This thing is a beast to be able to take all the punishment I have given it.

I've never been a serious flyer- spent the longest time on an Easystar and an Esky Nemo before going on to a World Models "Katana" (World Models Motor, Esky ESC, Esky servos in the wings but Hitec 55s in the tail) but an unfortunate incident a few weeks back and some complicated events following saw me moving VERY far upmarket to this PA Katana complete with Thrust 30 motor, PA Quantum 40 ESC, Hitec HS65HBs servos all round and JR RS70 synthesized Rx (my first ever non-Esky Rx).... and..... well.... all I can say is that this is the most money I have ever put into a single model in my life- ever.

Anyhoo, lacking the goolies to solo such an expensive plane all by myself, I had Radio Rookie lift her off the ground and trim her out before passing the radio to me.... and.... wow..... WHAT a ship.... smooth, accurate, predictable and surprisingly user-friendly..... expensive? Nah.... it'd be cheap at double the price (PA, please ignore this last comment).

Over the few battery packs I had with me, I was pulling some basic aerobatics- loops, rolls, Immelman turns, split-S', stall turns, cubans, reverse cubans- none of which I have ever been able to execute NEARLY as well as I suddenly could in the PA Katana. 

Geez man.. this plane sure makes me look good!

More importantly, she flies SO neutrally, so benignly and so predictably I'll now be able to focus on learning the MANOEUVRES I want to learn instead of having to learn the PLANE I'm flying first.... this is just BRILLIANT! Finally... I get to move past learning the idiosyncrasies of whichever airframe it is I happen to be flying (Esky, SAPAC, GWS, World Models- you name it) and just get on with the flying...... bloody marvellous!

I could go on like this for hours I love the plane so much but I won't- I'm sure none of this is new BUT I'd just like to make a couple points for newbies to the hobby of r/c flying like myself:-
1) you DON'T NEED to be a super experienced flyer to fly one of these. Fly one on low rates and you can go from a high wing trainer straight to one. Just make sure you got Radio Rookie (or near equivalent) nearby to get you out of any trouble you may find yourself in and you'll be FINE.
2) not only can you go from said high wing trainer to PA Katana, you SHOULD. I'm amazed at the amount of time I was WASTING learning planes instead of learning flying.

So now I'm (hopefully) poised to go up a steep-ish learning curve and start making beautiful moves in the air...... let's see.

The plane definitely makes me look good. I am a giant scale 3d guy, but I fly the electrics constantly. The Katana and Extra fly like the big planes. It was definitely love at first flight with me and the Katana!

The PA Katana is such a solid strong airframe. 
When you pick it up it is noticably sturdy unlike some 3d planes where you have to be so carefull where and how you pick them up with risk of breaking them lol

To add to that the landing gear feels rock solid and is the first plane that i feel i dont need to reinforce the landing gear.

I cant believe how sturdy the Fuse is!

Maidened my Purple Katana today. LOVE THIS PLANE!!!!! AUW is just under 35 oz. (two ounces heavier than my Extra 260). But man does this thing 3D so much easier for me. I was torquw rolling on my first flight! I hovered better today than I ever have before!!! KE spins were a breeze, waterfalls were straight, Blender was so predictable I'll be going to inverted harrier right off the deck in no time.

 

Man do I LOVE THIS KATANA! It just does everyhting so well! I flew in a small park today and had very little room to spare. But I had a blast doing rollers and KE up close and then pulling to hover right in front of my face! It was still very easy to zoom to 300' and turn over for a KE Spin or a blender and then just drop right back into this little park. Man is it a great little plane.

I flew my new bird this morning. Nothing spetacular about my flying. Played around with the CG some too. I love the way this model flys. It's my first ARF to date and I don't think I could've picked a better one to be my first.

Well I got to maiden my KMD yesterday...Good times for sure. This plane is a floater!! Very cool plane and its moving up the list of favorites. KMD is a winner!

Thanks to everyone for helping me out with the few questions I had earlier in this thread and to the PA team for answering all my questions before purchase.

I went for a green katana with the full IPAS pro kit and what can I say about this kit that hasn't been said a million times already. It's simply an awesome kit and an even better flyer. I've had quite a few nitro planes over the years from arf's to full build kits and I have yet to see this level of finish in an arf.

The maiden was done in light but gusty wind and it handled it with similar authority to my .60 size nitro planes! landings were some of the easiest I have ever done, coming in super smooth even with the gusts of wind. I always looked at electric planes as more of toy (park flyers) but in only a couple flights I have learned this plane is far from a park flyer and more in line with a good sized nitro plane.

I am an old customer and have all of your models and love them all  the  same. 
I just need to mention that I lost the plane due to range problem of the TX. The plane crashed vertically on  the   ground  with high speed and broke the  motor box  with the firewall and the cowl and the carbon tube of the left wing. Nothing else!!!! Even the wing that hit the ground had no damage at all.

We were all amazed of the plane condition when we show it!!! After such a huge crash  I've  seen elapor models to be completely  destroyed  but the MD sustained the  crash  very well!!!

What to say? Keep up the good work. You are in the top and you need to work hard to stay there, but you will have our support

always!
